Standing water in your washing machine at the end of a cycle is a frustrating problem, but it is one of the most common issues homeowners face. Before calling a professional, check these three common areas.
1. Check for a Clogged Drain Hose
Inspect the hose at the back of the washer. A kink in the hose or a physical blockage (like lint or small coins) can easily prevent water from draining. Straighten any kinks and flush the hose with water to ensure it’s clear.
2. Clean the Drain Pump Filter
Most modern front-loading washers have a small access panel at the bottom front. Place a shallow pan down, unscrew the filter cover, and clean out any coins, keys, hairpins, or lint that have accumulated inside.
3. Test the Lid Switch
For top-load washers, the lid switch is a safety feature that prevents the drum from spinning and draining when open. If the switch is broken or misaligned, the cycle will pause indefinitely.
