5 Simple Maintenance Tips to Extend the Lifespan of Your Refrigerator

Your refrigerator is the hardest working appliance in your home, running 24/7 to keep your food safe and fresh. With a little regular care, you can prevent unexpected breakdowns and save hundreds of dollars in repairs bills.

1. Clean the Condenser Coils

Dust and pet hair accumulate on the condenser coils over time, forcing your refrigerator’s compressor to work twice as hard. Pull the fridge out and vacuum the coils (located at the back or bottom) at least once a year.

2. Check and Clean the Door Seals (Gaskets)

Dirty gaskets let cool air escape, causing temperature fluctuations and wasting energy. Clean the seals with warm soapy water and inspect them for cracks or tears.

3. Keep the Temperature Settings Optimal

To maximize efficiency, keep your fresh food compartment set between 35°F and 38°F (1.6°C to 3.3°C) and the freezer at exactly 0°F (-18°C).

4. Keep it Loaded (But Don’t Block Vents)

A stocked refrigerator retains cold better than an empty one. However, make sure you don’t block the air vents, which restricts airflow and causes uneven cooling.

5. Clear the Freezer Drain Hole

If you notice water pooling at the bottom of your fridge, the defrost drain is likely clogged with ice or food particles. Flush it with warm water to restore proper drainage.
